CalTech Milonga: Friday, October 20

I am going to the CalTech Milonga--for the dancing, yes, but especially for the fresh waffles at 2AM. This is a club sponsored trip, meaning the club will pay for admission for any active members who want to come.

I will be arranging a car pool. If you need a ride, need some convincing, or need a drink. Please leave a comment here or email me and I will be more than happy to arrange something with you.

From their website:
"The California Institute of Technology is located at 1200 E. California Blvd., Pasadena, CA 91125, south of the 210 Freeway and west of the 110 Freeway."
The milonga goes from 11PM to 5AM. Waffles included.
Bring your college ID and admission is $5, but free through us!

I need a count for budgeting purposes, so if you don't tell me you're going, you're out of luck. No exceptions.

Ciao.

Club Meeting #2

This is the recap of our second club meeting held on October 14, 2006 with additional details filled in for future reference.

UCSB Milonga, October 21 2006
Don't forget that we are having our first milonga of the year this Saturday, Oct 21. Click on the date on the calender for more details. Don't forget about the quick beginning class taught by yours truly from 8-8:45. And if you're an experienced dancer, please consider coming to the class--we are expecting many new victims-ahem-attendees on Saturday. Thanks to Marlon and Andrew for volunteering to come early on Saturday to help set up.

CalTech All-Night Milonga, October 20, 2006
I don't know about you, but I'm just there for the waffles. Since this is a smaller trip, the club will only be paying for admission. If anyone is considering going, just come. If there are beginners who are considering the dive in instead of just getting their feet wet, I will be more than happy to accompany a group to the class they offer before the milonga. Visit their website for more information. Contact me if you have any questions, reservations about going, need a ride, or just need a hug. I'm quite friendly (sometimes).

Activities Faire 2006
It is on Wednesday, October 18 in Storke Plaza from 10AM to 3PM. We will be performing between 12PM and 1PM. Come see us. Eat some of our candy, it's free. We like saying that word. Candy. It's free. Yay!

Club Music Library
I, as the President, will be working with my Cabinet of Budgeting Management to determine a proper quarterly budget for the purchase of music to make freely available to club members. More details to come. Suffice it to say that we will all have fair use rights.

Three Tier Discount Program
You all got the jist of it on Saturday. I will make a more detailed post at a more reasonable hour very soon regarding the details of this ground breaking tango dancing program that gives you more than what you paid for because we love you in a very friendly peer to peer kind of way, even though we might have just met some of you.

About Argentine Tango

What is Argentine Tango?
Argentine Tango refers to the urban Argentine folk dance that developed around the turn of the 19th century and has continued to evolve through today. It is an improvised social dance with particular emphasis on good leading and following technique. As such, a mildly experienced tango dancer can dance with any partner regardless of whether or not they've dance before.

What's the difference between this and the tango I see on TV?
The difference is huge. The tango you see on TV, in those "Dancing with whomever" shows, is ballroom tango, which involves prechoreographed sequences of steps that are then pieced together into one dance. Here's what some of our members have to say about it:
Kara says, "Ballroom tango sucks."

Andrew says, "Ballroom tango is a caricature of Argentine tango. The soul and form of the dance is ripped out and replaced with flamboyant gestures that is then commercialized and exported."
As you can see, it can be a touchy subject. Since most of us have done both, we love to talk about it. But please, these are only opinions. We suggest that you come see the difference for yourself.

Please, tell me more!
If you want to find out more, then come and ask some of our more expierenced members. If you're looking for more reading on Argentine Tango on the internet, then Google it or Wiki it. I will post links to some articles that I've found to be very informative when it's not 3:17 in the morning.

About Us

We are the Argentine Tango Club at the University of California in sunny, picturesque Santa Barbara.

We are here to spread the happiness that is the improvisational social dance of Argentine Tango by providing instruction, practicas, and milongas. The club holds a weekly practica at Rob Gym on Saturdays and many of the members meet downtown on Wednesday nights for dancing at the Cafe Buenos Aires. Student members are offered free or sharply discounted instruction and dirt cheap oppurtunities to get in a magical night of dancing.

Quarterly club dues are only five dollars. Anyone can join, special discounts and events are offered to UCSB affiliates only. For five measly bucks, you get a lot. Last year, we took everyone out for dinner and dancing, on us! Become a member now, food and dancing is great.

Interested in tango? Want to join us? Meet us at the weekly practica on Saturdays in Rob Gym 2120 from 4:30-6:00pm. We hold milongas approximately every 3 weeks, usually coinciding with visits from great guest teachers from Argentina. Check our calender for upcoming events.

Undecided? Find out more about tango.
